In the Question 851, u have eliminated the the option D due to the reason that "The work" is singular subject and "Describe" is plural. Then, how come u chose the correct option to be A. If u check the option A, it also includes the plural action "Describe". Please clarify.

Ellipse the part unnecessary to the main idea and then analyse the options..

The work of mathematician Roger Penrose in the early 1970s turned out to describe the architecture of a previously unknown class of crystals - no grammatical error

Now apply the same to option D

The work of mathematician Roger Penrose in the early 1970s describe(s) the architecture of a previously unknown class of crystals
D is also changing the meaning of the sentence ..
